Greek Cocktails: Easy Mediterranean Twists for Your Favourite Summer Drinks

Tips from Your Greek Bestie: Give Your Favourite Cocktails a Mediterranean Twist

There's something undeniably special about a drink enjoyed on holiday. Whether it's a spritz overlooking the sea, a chilled mocktail shared over lunch or a simple gin and tonic enjoyed as the sun begins to set, everything somehow tastes better in the Mediterranean.

Of course, it isn't just the view that's responsible.

Across Greece, food and drink are built around fresh, uncomplicated ingredients. Rather than relying on sugary mixers or artificial flavours, you'll often find fresh citrus, herbs, fruit juices and simple combinations that allow each ingredient to speak for itself. It's an approach that's surprisingly easy to recreate at home and doesn't require learning a whole new cocktail menu.

If you're looking to bring a little Mediterranean sunshine to your next garden gathering, here are a few of my favourite ways to give classic summer drinks a Greek twist.

Rethink Your Mixer

One of the easiest ways to change a cocktail is by changing the mixer. Instead of reaching for lemonade, cola or fruit syrups, try using authentic Greek fruit juices or aloe vera drinks. Not only do they add natural flavour, but they also create a drink that feels lighter and lets the spirit take centre stage.

A pomegranate-based drink, for example, works beautifully anywhere you'd normally use cranberry, while a lemon aloe vera drink adds a subtle citrus freshness that's perfect in sparkling cocktails or served simply with soda water.

Try This: Greek Cosmo

Swap the cranberry juice in a traditional Cosmopolitan for Greek Biological Aloe Vera Gel Juice – Pomegranate Flavour.

You'll need:

Shake with plenty of ice and garnish with fresh pomegranate seeds or a twist of orange peel.

Let Fresh Herbs Do the Work

Fresh herbs aren't just for cooking. They're one of the simplest ways to add a Mediterranean feel to your favourite drinks without making them complicated.

Mint naturally belongs in mojitos, but rosemary works beautifully with gin, while thyme adds a lovely aromatic finish to sparkling wine cocktails. Even a simple glass of sparkling water can feel that little bit more special with fresh herbs and plenty of citrus.

The trick is to keep things simple. One herb, one fruit and good-quality ingredients are often all you need.

Try This: Mediterranean Spritz

Instead of adding extra liqueurs or flavoured syrups, try this lighter alternative.

You'll need:

Serve in a large wine glass and stir gently before enjoying.

Don't Be Afraid to Experiment

One of the joys of entertaining is discovering new combinations, and that's exactly where Greek fruit juices come into their own.

Peach nectar makes an excellent Bellini. Pineapple juice creates a lighter Piña Colada, while pomegranate adds depth to countless cocktails and mocktails. Even if you're making a drink you've prepared dozens of times before, swapping just one ingredient can create something completely different.

If you're avoiding alcohol altogether, these juices also make excellent bases for mocktails. Simply combine them with sparkling water, plenty of ice and fresh fruit for something every bit as enjoyable.

Try This: Golden Greek Mule

This Mediterranean-inspired take on a Moscow Mule adds a little extra warmth without overpowering the original flavours.

You'll need:

Serve in a tall glass with a lime wedge.

Don't Forget the Food

The best drinks are rarely served on their own.

Across Greece, it's perfectly normal for a few simple dishes to appear alongside whatever's in your glass. A basket of warm bread, a selection of authentic spreads, marinated vegetables, olives and a little feta are often all that's needed to turn a drink into an afternoon spent catching up with friends.

It isn't about creating an elaborate spread. It's about sharing good food and taking your time.

The Best Mediterranean Twist Isn't an Ingredient

If there's one thing I'd encourage you to borrow from Greece this summer, it isn't a particular cocktail or even a specific ingredient.

It's the pace.

Open a bottle a little earlier than usual. Put some music on. Bring a few dishes to the table, pour yourself something cold and stay outside a little longer than you planned.

Because that's the real Mediterranean lifestyle. Good food, good drinks and good company, enjoyed without watching the clock.

Your Greek Bestie's Tip

Keep a selection of authentic Greek juices and aloe vera drinks in the fridge throughout the summer. Whether you're mixing cocktails, creating refreshing mocktails or simply pouring a glass over ice with a slice of citrus, they're an easy way to bring a little taste of Greece to your table.
