Description
Greek Raw Organic Fir Honey, Creamy Mainalo Forest Honey, 950g, glass jar:
Greek Raw Organic Fir Honey from the Mountains of Mainalo
Creamy, golden and gently sweet, this is honey unlike anything on the supermarket shelf. Axion Esti's Organic Fir Honey comes from the fir forests of Mainalo in Arcadia, where bees forage at altitudes of up to 2,000m. It is harvested only in June and July. If you love authentic Greek food and the Mediterranean diet, this 950g jar deserves a place in your kitchen.
The creamiest Greek honey you'll taste
Fir honey is creamier than other honey varieties, with a smooth, velvety texture that coats the spoon. Known in Greece as vanilla fir honey for its pale colour and soft sweetness, it has a golden hue and pearlescent highlights, complemented by the herbs of the mountainside. Its taste is subtly sweet rather than sugary, and it does not crystallise, so it stays smooth in the jar.
Vanilla fir honey from Mainalo was the first Greek honey recognised with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status, a mark of how closely it is tied to this one landscape.
What is honey?
Honey is a natural food made by bees. They collect nectar from flowers or honeydew from trees, then transform and store it in the honeycomb. Fir honey is a forest honey, made largely from the sweet honeydew found on fir trees, which gives it its distinctive character.
Why people make honey part of a healthy lifestyle
Honey has been treasured for thousands of years, dating back to ancient Greece, where it was valued both as a natural sweetener and as part of traditional diets.
Beyond its naturally occurring sugars, honey contains small amounts of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and enzymes. It also provides naturally occurring plant compounds, including polyphenols and flavonoids, which have antioxidant properties. The exact nutritional composition varies depending on the flowers from which the bees collect their nectar.
Unlike refined white sugar, honey offers more than sweetness alone. Its natural composition includes trace nutrients and bioactive compounds, making it an interesting addition to a varied and balanced diet.
Honey has also been traditionally appreciated for its soothing properties, particularly when enjoyed in warm drinks. Its natural antioxidant compounds contribute to its nutritional appeal, while its distinctive flavours and aromas reflect the flowers and plants of its origin.
A natural part of the Mediterranean food tradition, honey is a delicious way to sweeten yoghurt, porridge, fruit, herbal teas and homemade recipes. Whether you choose floral, thyme or pine honey, each variety offers its own unique taste and character.
Enjoy it in moderation as part of a healthy, balanced lifestyle.
What does "raw honey" mean?
Raw honey is honey as the hive made it. It isn't pasteurised or ultra-filtered, so its natural pollen, enzymes, aroma and flavour are preserved rather than processed away.
What does "certified organic honey" mean?
Certified organic honey is produced under strict, independently inspected standards covering where hives are placed, what bees can forage on and how colonies are cared for. Synthetic chemical treatments are not used in routine hive care. This honey is certified by DIO (GR-BIO-01) and carries the EU organic logo.

Why Greek honey is the best in the world
We believe Greece produces the best honey in the world, thanks to its climate. Long hours of sunshine, mild winters and dry summers, along with mountains, forests and thousands of wild plant species, give bees an exceptional place to forage. The result is honey with remarkable aroma and depth of flavour.
